Especially since she has been hiding it for so long and creating an alternative personality in order to be popular… Add a bunch of other cheesy high school cliches and a love triangle and it was close to ruining the story for me. Those nerdy elements are without doubt the best part of this book! The story reads easily and both Logan and Dan are adorkable (in the best possible way.) And there is where it also went wrong: it really bothered me that the main character Maddie is so ashamed of the fact that she likes comics and other geeky things. It’s without doubt a fast-paced and mostly entertaining contemporary romance story and I LOVED the geeky/comic references. And while it’s certainly a great summer read, I’m having mixed thoughts about The Summer I Became A Nerd. I picked this book up on a whim because of the summery title, mostly because I needed something to distract me from the cold weather down here. “Be true to yourself and others will be true to you, too.” 2023 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge.2017 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge. She comes to this universal event with personal baggage she has already declared. But she couldn't see that when it came to ordinariness, she hardly seemed the woman for the job.Īs anyone who has read The Liar's Club will know, Karr was raped before she was 10, and her babysitter forced her to give him a blow-job. So the memoirist in Karr set out to write about the ordinary process of losing one's virginity. Where her own writing is concerned, her perspective seems to shift uncomfortably between critical distance and self-absorption.įor example, the critic in Karr describes writing Cherry in response to a gap in the market: there are coming-of-age memoirs written by men, but 'women don't write about sexual activity between the ages of 12 and 18 - unless it's aberrant'. She also holds a chair in English literature at Syracuse University in New York State. Mary Karr makes a living out of transferring her life onto the page. At this point, Cheung, now a journalist, grew politicized, and she also suffered debilitating depression, which her family did not understand and that further alienated her from them. Her generation felt they had a grace period of decades until China actually took over-“one country, two systems model to guarantee the city’s way of life”-but by 2014, China was cracking down on Hong Kong’s election autonomy, actions that led to the emergence of the Umbrella Movement. She could not wait to leave home at age 18. “At Tiananmen Square, where less than a decade ago students were killed asking for democracy,” she writes, “Beijingers are waving little handheld flags with the Hong Kong bauhinia flower stamped onto it, celebrating our return.” Cheung’s parents separated, and her mother went to Singapore with her younger brother the author lived in Hong Kong with her critical, authoritative father but was largely raised by her paternal grandmother, who she felt was the only one who loved her. The colonial handover from Britain occurred on July 1, 1997, when the author was just 4 years old. An intimate look at Hong Kong by an “ambivalent” native who never appreciated it until the incremental seizure of freedoms by mainland China.Ĭheung is one of the few in her cohort trying to stay in Hong Kong and make a living despite the crackdown, and she has dedicated herself to getting to know her city as its character, she fears, is slipping away. So my friends and I aren't alone, nor will you be. In fact, according to the New York Times, approximately 5 million Americans gather with friends and fellow bibliophiles on a semi-regular basis to discuss literature. But we are also yuppies with a feminist bent - and a tendency to pick books with strong female characters. If you're anything like my close circle of young, newly professional, busy and nerdy women, planning a book club meeting often requires a few failed scheduling attempts and serious negotiations about who will bring the wine. Nerdy is the new black - so much so, in fact, that book clubs are back in fashion. (Probably didn't help that Rugrat was a frequent butt monkey for Belfort, Azoff, and their fellow Strattonites.) It was only in 2018 when a judge ruled in favor of the producers, stating that they took all the necessary steps to ensure no one was defamed, such as making Koskoff a composite, giving him a fictional name and backstory, and including a disclaimer during the credits. Jordan Belfort is a young stockbroker who is hungry for life, non-stop thrills and tons of money though his means are not necessarily legal. That was not enough to mollify former Stratton broker Andrew Greene, who, in 2014, sued the film's producers for defamation because Rugrat was supposedly based on him and made to look like a "criminal, drug user, degenerate, depraved and devoid of any morals or ethics," per The Guardian. What about the motley crew of misfits who initially made up Stratton's workforce? That's where the composite characters come in, as the likes of Alden "Sea Otter" Kupferberg (Henry Zebrowski), Robbie "Pinhead" Feinberg (Brian Sacca), Chester Ming (Kenneth Choi), and Nicky "Rugrat" Koskoff (PJ Byrne) were mostly inspired by multiple people mentioned by Belfort in his memoir, then given fictional names, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Wolf of Wall Street may be Scorsese’s most fully realized movie, with its elaboration of a world view that, without endorsing Belfort’s predatory manipulations and reckless.
